U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has notified the top election officials in four states that preliminary federal reviews identified more than 250,000 potential non-citizens on their voter rolls.
Mullin sent letters to Secretaries of State Shirley Weber of California, Dale Caldwell of New Jersey, Francisco Aguilar of Nevada, and Al Schmidt of Pennsylvania, the department announced on July 17, 2026.
According to DHS, preliminary reviews of state records indicated that as many as 190,832 non-citizens may be registered to vote in California, 35,152 in New Jersey, 15,903 in Nevada, and 14,576 in Pennsylvania.
“Election security is national security,” Mullin said. “As President Trump announced last night, DHS has identified over 250,000 potential non-citizens illegally registered to vote in just 4 U.S. states. Only Americans should be electing American leaders.”
Mullin asked each secretary of state to reply within two weeks and to confirm whether they will work with DHS to help secure free, fair, and honest elections.
The letters follow other recent federal actions related to election integrity. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has begun requiring grant recipients to take certain steps tied to election security, and DHS has directed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to pursue stricter penalties, including deportation, against illegal aliens who vote in American elections.
