A 26-year-old General Motors employee was arrested Tuesday after allegedly calling 911 to report that he had shot a co-worker during an argument in the parking lot of the automaker’s Arlington Assembly plant.
Larry Hines was charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following the shooting, which left a 24-year-old man in critical condition.
Argument Escalated Into Shooting
Arlington police responded around 6:35 a.m. to reports of a shooting at the GM Assembly plant in the 2500 block of East Abram Street.
When officers arrived, they found a 24-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to an area hospital, where he remains in stable but critical condition. Authorities have not released his identity.
Investigators said Hines fled the parking lot immediately after the shooting.
A short time later, police received a 911 call from a man identifying himself as being involved in the shooting and providing his location.
Officers responded to an apartment complex in the 4100 block of Viridian Village Drive, where they located Hines and took him into custody without incident.
Co-Workers Involved in Dispute
Police said Hines and the victim both worked the overnight shift at the GM plant and were leaving work when they became involved in a verbal argument that escalated into gunfire.
Investigators believe the two men knew each other prior to the incident and described the shooting as an isolated event.
Arlington police continue interviewing witnesses as the investigation remains active.
GM Assisted Investigation
General Motors confirmed the shooting involved two employees and said it is cooperating with law enforcement.
“We can confirm there was a shooting incident between two employees in the parking lot of Arlington Assembly Plant today, which left one of them injured,” the company said in a statement, Fox 4 KDFW reported. “Our focus is on supporting that individual, their loved ones, and our Arlington team. We are cooperating with law enforcement and appreciate their assistance.”
Arlington police credited the company with providing investigators with key evidence and immediate medical assistance for the victim before first responders arrived.
“They provided evidence that was very crucial to this case,” Arlington police spokesperson Tim Ciesco said, per Fox 4. “When we arrived on scene, they actually … have some type of medical staff there on scene who were already tending to the victim by the time first responders got there, no doubt that was a big help as well.”
Ciesco said officers received Hines’ 911 call while emergency crews were treating the victim at the plant.
“While we were out there responding and working to get him to the hospital, we received a 911 call from a man who told dispatchers that he had been involved in the shooting, and he was calling from a different location,” Ciesco said.
Investigation Continues
No other injuries or property damage were reported.
Hines remained in the Arlington City Jail on Wednesday on the aggravated assault charge as detectives continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
