Dallas police officers and firefighters rescued a young woman who had been trapped for several days in deep mud and sewage at the bottom of a steep ravine behind a Dallas high school after a passerby heard her faint cries for help.
The rescue took place on June 28 at about 5:25 p.m. in a wooded area behind Emmett J. Conrad High School in the 7600 block of Fair Oaks Avenue, between the Vickery Meadow and Lake Highlands neighborhoods.
According to a social media post by the Dallas Police Department, a young man walking through the area heard faint calls for help and investigated. He found a young woman trapped in a steep ravine, unable to free herself from deep mud and sewage.
Dallas Police and Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to the scene, where first responders navigated nearly a quarter mile of rugged terrain in 104-degree heat to reach the woman.
Crews successfully extricated her from the ravine and transported her to a local hospital. Authorities said she was treated for severe dehydration, prolonged sun exposure, and other injuries related to being trapped for several days.
Officials have not released the woman’s identity or current condition. They also did not disclose how she became trapped or identify the bystander who alerted authorities.
In a statement, the Dallas Police Department praised the coordinated response by multiple agencies.
“The well-being of the Dallas community is not something that’s handled by a single agency. It takes a collaborative effort from multiple teams and organizations working side-by-side to ensure every person’s safety.”
The department also thanked the officers, firefighters, and paramedics involved in the operation, saying their swift actions helped save the woman’s life.
Commenters on the Police department’s social media post about the incident also praised the unidentified young man who led authorities to the woman.
“I also believe the young man who stepped up deserves a little more recognition. He did the right thing by finding her and immediately calling 911. His quick actions played an important role in bringing this incident to a positive outcome,” said social media user Jared Bart.
Another user, Bernice Espinosa De Leon, commented, “Thank you to the young man that chose to investigate and not walk away. The actions taken by this young man were courageous!”
