Texas is launching what state officials describe as the nation’s first comprehensive state-authorized precious metals commemorative program, introducing a new series of gold and silver coins along with 24-karat gold collectible bills.
Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock announced the launch of the 2026 State of Texas Commemorative Series, which includes gold and silver commemorative coins known as Lone Stars and a line of Modern Redbacks gold bills. The products are expected to become available in mid-July through authorized national coin and bullion dealers.
Officials said the initiative is being issued through the Texas Bullion Depository and is designed to promote the state-run facility while celebrating Texas history and culture.
First-of-its-Kind State Program
According to the comptroller’s office, the program marks the first time a U.S. state has offered a comprehensive precious metals initiative combining bullion-grade coins, collectible proof coins and 24-karat gold bills.
“We are proud to oversee this important initiative on behalf of the people of Texas,” Hancock said in a statement. “The State of Texas Commemorative Series reflects years of hard work to build a depository that Texans can trust, and it’s an honor to bring a program of this caliber to market — one that celebrates Texas history while advancing the financial protections for Texans that the Legislature envisioned.”
The commemorative products are intended for collectors and precious metals investors. Officials emphasized that neither the coins nor the gold bills are legal tender, with their value determined by their precious metal content and collectible appeal.
Coin Honors Texas Heritage
The 2026 Lone Star coin was designed by internationally recognized numismatic artist Joel Iskowitz. State officials said the design is among Iskowitz’s final completed works before his recent death.
According to the state, the commemorative series is intended to honor the people, places and events that have shaped Texas while reflecting values including independence, strength, resilience and prosperity.
Depository Administrator Macy Douglas said the collection is expected to expand awareness of the Texas Bullion Depository.
“We are proud to introduce the State of Texas Commemorative Series to Texans and collectors around the world,” Douglas said. “This is the first program of its kind in any state, and we believe it will strengthen the brand of the depository while serving as a tribute to the people, places and events that have shaped the Lone Star State.”
Abbott Highlights Depository’s Mission
Gov. Greg Abbott, who signed legislation creating the Texas Bullion Depository in 2015, said the commemorative products build on the state’s efforts to provide secure storage for precious metals.
“When I signed legislation to create the Texas Bullion Depository, our state sent a clear message that Texans deserve real protections when it comes to their precious metals,” Abbott said. “The State of Texas Commemorative Series is the next step in delivering on that promise. These products will help promote the depository on a national and global scale and highlight the important work it does to safeguard the wealth and assets of everyday Texans.”
The Texas Bullion Depository, established by the Legislature in 2015, is the nation’s first state-administered precious metals depository. The facility was created to provide Texans and investors with a state-operated option for storing physical gold and silver.
The 2026 State of Texas Commemorative Series will be available through authorized retailers beginning in mid-July. A list of authorized retailers can be found here.
