Trump Administration Asks Supreme Court to Allow Deployment of National Guard in Chicago Area

ELWOOD, ILLINOIS – OCTOBER 07: Members of the Texas National Guard stand guard at an army reserve training facility on October 07, 2025 in Elwood, Illinois. The Trump administration has been threatening for more than a month to send the guard to Illinois to address Chicago’s crime problem and to support ICE and CBP during Operation Midway Blitz. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has been outspoken in his opposition to the move, accusing the president of using the guardsmen as political pawns. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court to allow the deployment of National Guard troops in the Chicago area, escalating President Donald Trump’s conflict with Democratic governors over using the military on U.S. soil. The emergency appeal to the high court Friday came after a judge prevented, for at least two weeks, the deployment of Guard members from Illinois and Texas to assist immigration officers. A federal appeals court refused to put the judge’s order on hold. The conservative-dominated court has handed Trump repeated victories in emergency appeals since he took office in January. Trump has already pushed traditional boundaries by using the National Guard domestically.
