DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Two monkeys were found to be missing from their habitat at the Dallas Zoo on Monday morning.

According to the Dallas Zoo, zoo officials alerted the Dallas Police Department after the animal care team discovered the two emperor tamarin monkeys were missing.

“It was clear the habitat had been intentionally compromised,” the zoo said in a statement. Emperor tamarin monkeys would likely stay close to home. The Zoo searched near their habitat and across Zoo grounds, and did not locate them.”

The Dallas Zoo said Monday afternoon that based on the Dallas Police Department’s initial assessment, there’s reason to believe the tamarins were taken.

The incident followed the discovery of a dead endangered vulture inside its enclosure last week. It was found with a wound. A week before the vulture’s death, a clouded leopard temporarily escaped after its enclosure was cut.

Local and Federal authorities are investigating the bizarre string of events at the zoo.
