Mother of Athena Strand Committed to Accountability

WISE COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF) – The mother of the 7-year-old Wise County girl who Police say was kidnapped and murdered by a contracted Fed Ex driver is committed to finding accountability in her daughter’s death.

Athena was found dead last week after a FedEx driver kidnapped and killed her after making a Christmas delivery to her father’s home in Paradise.

Maitlyn Gandy spoke to reporters on Thursday with her newly acquired attorney by her side.

“Our short-term efforts are focused on Athena’s family,” said Varghese, Managing Partner of Varghese Summersett. “Our long-term goals are to thoroughly investigate how and why this happened and to hold any person or corporation accountable whose actions or inactions could have prevented this little girl’s tragic death.”

Varghese said his office is investigating the facts around Athena’s murder and is looking into whether or not a person or corporate policy played a role in Athena’s death. He said the decision whether or not to file a lawsuit will not be rushed.

Gandy told reported on Thursday that the package delivered to Athena’s home before she was killed was a box of Barbie’s that was meant to be a Christmas present.
