‘Lazy Fire’ in Palo Pinto County Threatens Homes Amid Rough Terrain; Now 75% Contained

UPDATE 10?02/2022 1:30 PM – Officials declare the Lazy Fire now 75% contained and still at 1,800 acres burned.

UPDATE 10/01/2022 11:15 AM – The Lazy Fire has ballooned to engulf 1,800 acres as of Saturday morning, and is reported as 65% contained. Officials now report the blaze began as a prescribed burn in the noon hour on Thursday the 29th of September. The fire is burning west of State Highway 16; about six miles south of Possum Kingdom Lake.

Relatively low humidity levels will continue to place more weight on fire activity all weekend; east southeast winds will develop today at 5-10 miles, continuing through the evening, but becoming light overnight. Relative humidity recovery is expected to be near 55% later Saturday with higher gusts accompanying winds east southeast at 10 to 15 miles an hour and a high temperature in the fire zone and nearby at around 90 F.

Palo Pinto County, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – A number of fire departments are working a large grass fire that broke out Thursday afternoon just south of Possum Kingdom Lake in Palo Pinto County.

The Texas A&M Forest Service says the Lazy Fire has burned an estimated 750 acres and is 10% contained as of 9 p.m. last night, according to our media partner WFAA-TV.

Multiple homes are threatened amid rugged, hard-to-get-to terrain.

Before the the forest service responded, a controlled burn was happening in the area by the Possum Kingdom Lake Volunteer Fire Department .

The quickily spreading fire put up to 200 racing horses in immediate danger.

Morgan Broome of the Rancher Navy organization rushed to the scene to help, telling the station that the animals were saved, but a ranch hand was injured an hospitalized, but is expected to be okay.

Meantime, TAMFS continues to warn about dry conditions. The slighted spark could cause a fire to spread quickly.
