AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Governor Greg Abbott’s Public Safety Office is accepting applications from law enforcement agencies for Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) and the Bullet-Resistant Shield Grant Program for the fiscal year 2023.

In the wake of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, state leaders transferred $105.5 million to support increased school safety and mental health initiatives, including $3 million for local law enforcement agencies to offset travel expenditures for ALERRT training and $50 million for bullet-resistant shields.

The move was in response to a call from numerous school districts statewide, for increased funding for security across several fronts including getting more of the ballistic shields to police departments.

In a statement released Wednesday, Abbott said the grants will help school districts to better protect its students.

“These new funds will give law enforcement officers expanded access to training for active shooter scenarios, as well as critical protective equipment. I encourage all eligible law enforcement agencies and local government entities to apply for this additional funding as we work together to keep all Texans safe,” he said.

The deadline to apply for the bullet-resistant shield grant is September 16, 2022. The deadline to apply for the ALERRT course is August 31, 2023.
