Tarrant County Offering Free Rides Amid Early Voting, November 2 Election Day

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – Tarrant County residents who want to cast a ballot amid early voting and on election day, November 2, now have access to free rides on public transportation.

Riders just need to show their current Texas ID or voter registration card and get to and from their polling station at no charge.

The service will be provided by all public transportation in the county like Trinity Metro, ZipZone, Northeast Transportation Services and Arlington’s Via or Handitran.

County Assistant Administrator Kristen Camareno said the services erases a barrier that some face amid elections.

“Transportation is a key element for ensuring that individuals have a way to get to the polls. So, this is just one more way to improve access and options,” she said.

It’s the third year the county has approved funding up to $30,000 for the service which has proved popular among residents.

“Last year, we had over 5,800 trips taken as part of this program. We anticipate similar response this year. We’ve had positive feedback overall,” said Camareno.

County leaders are hoping the trend continues this year as there are important issues on the ballot.

Locally, Fort Worth ISD has asked voters to approve $1.5 billion in bond proposals that officials said will pay for renovations and upgrades to middle schools, add a new elementary school, upgrades to fine arts facilities, auditoriums, stadiums and rec facilities.

The district said the proposals would not raise residents taxes.

In addition to that, state leaders have put forth eight proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution.

The amendments include deciding on who can enact laws to prohibit or limit religious worship, whether or not counties can issue bonds for infrastructure, change the eligibility requirements for Supreme Court justices, criminal appeals judges, justice of a court of appeals and district judges as well as whether or not raffles can be allowed at rodeos.

Camareno urges residents to make their voices heard this year and use the free rides to cast their ballots.

“It’s always important to exercise your right to vote and this gives you one more opportunity and makes it just that much easier to get to the polls to do that,” she said.
