Public Utility Commission of Texas Approves Weatherization Rule

(WBAP/KLIF) – The Public Utility Commission of Texas voted on Thursday to require power generating companies to weatherize their generators.

The move comes in the aftermath of February’s deadly winter storm that left millions of Texans in the dark.

According to the PUC, the approval gives generators a benchmark for preparation by taking what were “best practices” published after the 2011 storm and making them rules with specific actions and the power of penalties behind them.

“As a result, the CEOs of power generating companies will be required by attest to the readiness of their plants by the end of this year,” said PUC Director of External Affairs, Andrew Barlow.

Barlow said ERCOT will be inspecting generation facilities, starting with the most critical plants first.
