North Texas First Responders Preparing for National Drug Take Back Day

NORTH TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – North Texas police departments and EMS departments are getting ready for National Drug Take Back Day, Saturday, October 23.

The Drug Enforcement Agency event was created to help address prescription drug abuse which has become a key public safety and health issue.

According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use, 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers, 4.9 million people misused prescription stimulants and 5.9 million people misused prescription tranquilizers or sedatives.

The survey showed that the majority of the drugs were obtained from family or friends, often from someone’s home medicine cabinet.

Some first responders in North Texas have already announced their plans for Saturday.

MedStar, the Tarrant County ambulance service, said it will have a medication drop offsite from 10 am to 2 pm at the headquarters on 2900 Alta Mere Drive in Fort Worth.

The Irving Police Department said residents can disposed of their unwanted prescriptions from 10 am to 2 pm in the department parking lot at 305 N. O’Conner Road and Medical City Las Colinas.

Residents can check their police, fire or ambulance service providers social media pages for information on drop off sites.
