AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) – There’s another lifeline for Texans who continue to struggle financially due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs has launched the $1 billion Texas Rent Relief Program, which will help qualifying individuals with rent and utility fees.
The TDHCA will begin accepting applications for the program Monday, February 15th but Texans can visit TexasRentRelief.com today to get information about who qualifies, required documents and the application process.
Governor Abbott said the infusion of funding comes from the latest federal COVID-19 stimulus bill. “I urge qualifying households to apply for this program once applications open February 15th. The State of Texas will continue to provide resources and support for those in need throughout the pandemic,” he said.
Those who qualify must be at of below 80% of the area median income as well as meet other criteria.
TDCHA will follow federal guidelines and prioritize applications for households at or below 50% of the area median income and households where one or more members are currently unemployed and have been for at least 90 days.
Landlords are encouraged to apply on behalf of tenants, who must co-sign the application.

The call center is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
