DENTON (WBAP/KLIF)-  Denton County is seeing a downward trend in Covid-19 hospitalization rates.

Denton County Public Health Director Dr. Matt Richardson said they are at 21.5% compared to their highest at almost 27% during the holidays.

Richardson said though the rates are trending down it’s still a major concern with 1 in 5 people in the hospitals having Covid-19.

“We are not out of the woods. In fact, before Christmas we were at 18.8% so since Christmas we haven’t been below 20%…that’s a concern and that’s a long time to have that many people with Covid-19 in the hospital,” said Richardson.

Richardson said they are hopeful with the decrease in Covid-19 hospitalization rates but are also “cautiously optimistic” and a little weary.

He reminds residents to stay vigilant and keep up with the CDC guidelines. “Masks and physical distancing, that’s still of preeminent importance. We still have to do our part, otherwise this is all for nothing,” he said.

The Governor’s threshold to ease restrictions is a 15% hospitalization rate for the region.
