House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Send Impeachment Article Against Former President Trump to Senate Monday

WASHINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will send the article of impeachment against former President Donald Trump to the Senate on Monday.

That move would kick start the trial soon after.

The House impeached Trump a second time on a charge of “incitement of insurrection” stemming from the deadly riot by a mob of Trump’s supporters at the U.S. Capitol January 6.

Five people died including a U.S. Capitol police officer.

Speaking on the Senate floor Friday, Schumer criticized a proposal by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to affirm to spare the filibuster as part of a power sharing deal.

“The Republican leader has made an extraneous demand that has placed additional constraints on the majority. Constraints that have never been in place before. In fact, his proposal would remove a tool that the Republican leader himself used twice in just the last Congress to accelerate the confirmation of Republican nominees,” he said.

McConnell pushed back at Schumer’s argument over the filibuster.

“Floor remarks surrounding those 20-01 discussions specifically site the legislative filibuster as an important and unquestioned part of the back drop that lay beneath the negotiations on the final details. It was assumed no one would ever take that step,” he said.

McConnell has proposed to postpone the impeachment trial until February to give Trump’s legal team time to prepare and review his case.
