Texas Leaders Continue to Discourage Defunding Police

HOUSTON (WBAP/KLIF) – State leaders in Texas continue to discourage cities from defunding Police departments.

The City of Austin recently allocated $150 million away from Police.

Governor Abbott continues efforts to make it tough on cities that defund their Police departments. He said Wednesday in Houston that if Austin doesn’t change it’s approach to policing, the state will consider taking over policing certain parts of the city. The Governor also proposed considering consequences for jurisdictions that refuse to prosecute crimes already illegal under state law.

“When public safety is in jeopardy it’s not just an issue of local control,” said Senator John Cornyn who joined the Governor, Lt. Governor, and Speaker of the House in Houston.

Governor Abbott has previously proposed freezing property taxes and removing annexation powers in cities that defund Police.
