Governor Abbott Urges Texans to Remain Vigilant As Tropical Storm Beta Approaches

AUSTIN  (WBAP/KLIF News) – As Tropical Storm Beta barrels toward the Texas Coast, Governor Greg Abbott is urging Texans to listen to local officials and make preparations to stay safe.

Forecasters said Beta could bring up to 20 inches of rain in parts of Texas and Louisiana over the next few days.

In a statement released Sunday, Aboott said the state has the necessary assets in place to respond and help communities with heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management and the State Operations Center is monitoring the situation and coordinating with the National Weather Service and their West Gulf River Forecast Center.

According to the statement, the SOC has been activated to Level II, Escalated Response Conditions, to bolster the state’s continued response to the COVID-19 pandemic and Beta.

Abbott wants residents in the impacted areas to know that the state is ready to act on a moments notice.

“The State of Texas is prepared to support communities in the path of the storm, where substantial amounts of rainfall and flash flooding are a significant threat. We will continue to closely monitor the storm and work collaboratively with officials to ensure our fellow Texans are safe,” said Abbott.

The Governor also provided some links to Texans about safety and preparedness tips.
