Quarter Million South Texas Customers Without Power; Downgraded Hanna Unleashes South Texas Damage

DALLAS – Deep South Texas is being surveyed for damage assessments today, as Hurricane Hanna is downgraded to Tropical Storm status, with current sustained winds pegged at 50 mph from it’s 90 mph winds as it made landfall near the border with Mexico Saturday night.
Officials describe very bad flooding from the storm around McAllen, but damage is reported from flooding and winds in Corpus Christi and southward into Brownsville along the coast.

Port Aransas on Mustang Island just outside of Corpus Christi reports severe flooding in the town’s northern and southern parts, with some areas flooded by 2 to 3 feet of water.  The Bob Hall Pier in Port Aransas collapsed Saturday night as a result of winds and storm surge.

Hanna made landfall on Padre Island at 5 pm Saturday with sustained 90 mile an hour winds.   Hanna is now categorized as a Troipcal storm, and last pegged moving west southwest into Mexico at 9 miles an hour.  Hanna unleashed an average 5 to 10 inches of rain in many areas, but forecasters talked of 18 inches of rain in some regions.

The storm is expected to wreak havoc on Mexico as it pounds the mountains causing that region additional flash flooding problems in the first part of this week.
