U.S. Economy Sheds 701,000 Jobs in March, Ending 10-Year Hiring Streak

U.S. (Associated Press) – The job numbers are out for March and paint a grim picture of the economic outlook in the United States due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Employers cut 701,000 jobs ending a 10-year streak of hiring.

The unemployment rate jumped to 4.4% from a 50-year low of 3.5%.

Analysts predict last months the job loss was actually higher because the government surveyed employers before the heaviest layoffs hit in the past two weeks.

Almost 10 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits within that time and broke a record for the country.

Since the outbreak began, sectors such as restaurants, retail, hotels, manufacturing and administrative offices have been hit especially hard.
