DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas County extended its ‘stay at home’ order on Friday.

The Dallas County Commissioners Court voted 4 to 1 to extend the disaster declaration until May 20 amid the coronavirus pandemic. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins later prolonged the county’s ‘safer at home order’ to April 30. The order requires non-essential businesses to operate from home. Residents can only leave their homes to engage in essential activities, as listed by the county.

The one vote against extending the declaration belonged to Commissioner John Wiley Price. According to Price, the order isn’t consistent when it comes to which business are essential and which ones aren’t.

“Right now I see crowding around liquor stores but I don’t see my barber shops and beauty shops being able to make day to day,” Price said.

Price believes the restrictions and length of the order make it difficult for small businesses to survive.

“60 days is capital murder,” said Price. “That’s a death sentence to a lot of small businesses.”

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins thanked the Commissioners who voted to extend the declaration Friday afternoon.

“Your decision to put public health first sends a strong message to healthcare heroes and residents. We will continue to work with you, the business community and residents to save lives,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins urged all residents and businesses to adhere by the restrictions.
