Shelter in Place Order Issued for Dallas County Amid Continued Spread of Coronavirus

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) -A shelter in place, also known as a “stay at home” order, will go into effect Monday night in Dallas County.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins announced the order Sunday evening.

“This order is our best chance to flatten the curve in Dallas County and save as many lives as possible,” Judge Jenkins said.

There are exceptions for essential activities and businesses. Carryout and delivery at restaurants is still okay. Grocery stores will stay open.

“Because of the risk of the rapid spread of the virus, and the need to protect the most vulnerable members of the community, this Order requires all individuals anywhere in Dallas County to shelter in place – that is, stay at home – except for certain essential activities and work to provide essential business and government services or perform essential public infrastructure construction, including housing,” the executive order reads.

Governor Greg Abbott chose not to issue a similar order statewide. Instead he left it up to local governments for now, claiming different counties are experiencing different realities.

“If they choose to so, I would applaud them for doing so,” Governor Abbott said Sunday.

The Dallas County order takes effect Monday at 11:59 p.m.
