WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump has tested negative for the novel coronavirus. The White House says the president’s physician has found that Trump also remains symptom-free.

Reporters had continued to ask Trump why he was hesitating to undergo screening when he had been exposed to at least three people who have tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, the White House has instituted screening for anyone coming into close contact with Trump or other officials, checking them for elevated temperatures.

A reporter heading to Saturday’s briefing was turned away after a temperature check indicated an elevated temperature.

White House staffers are now being screened.

Meantime, Washington is confronting the coronavirus with new tools and the expectation that the pandemic will get worse before it gets better.

President Donald Trump says the U.S. will broaden its European travel restrictions to include Britain and Ireland. His emergency declaration has freed billions of dollars to help states and communities manage the crisis. And a big aid package passed by the House looks likely to become law.

Even so, officials said sickness is likely to spread in the U.S. in coming days. Trump says people shouldn’t travel unless they have to.
