Canadian-Based Electric Car Company Looking at Opening Manufacturing Plant in Fort Worth, Bringing 200 Jobs

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- A Canadian-based electric car company is looking at opening an assembly site and engineering technical center in Fort Worth.

ElectraMeccanica has narrowed down it’s search and Fort Worth is one of six cities on that list of prospects. “Starting out we are looking to employ around 200 people,” said  CEO Paul Rivera. “It going to be mix of skilled labor and engineers because we want to put an engineering center and advanced technology center,” he said.

The plant will produce it’s single seat, three wheeled electric vehicle. Rivera says the SOLO Electric Vehicle is affordable and you can drive it in the HOV lane to avoid traffic. “Dallas-Fort Worth is the serendipity of the right kind of skills the right kind of infrastructure and this vehicle will be a game changer for the urban driving challenges that are presented in the state,” he said.

Rivera said the operation would be expected to meet the growing demand for SOLO EVs throughout the United States, where EVs are expected to exceed more than 30% of all passenger vehicles by 2040. In addition, the proposed new U.S.-based facility would allow ElectraMeccanica to reduce or potentially eliminate tariffs, as well as benefit from logistical efficiencies.

Sleek, maneuverable and environmentally friendly, the three-wheeled SOLO redefines the mobility space, offering a trendy, fun and safe vehicle that will solve many of the challenges of urban driving. The vehicle is also ideal for the exponentially growing commercial fleets that have a single occupant making deliveries of their merchandise, as well as ride share companies looking to offer a sleek option for individuals driving alone.

The leading location and backup sites are expected to be announced in the third quarter of 2020.
