FEMA Gives City of Dallas More Time to Apply for Federal Disaster Assistance

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The federal government is giving Dallas more time to determine total damages caused by October’s EF-3 tornado.

The city must prove more than $38 million in uninsured damages in order to receive a federal disaster declaration from FEMA. The declaration is mandatory to be given federal financial assistance.

Texas received an initial extension until December 20, 2019 to submit the request. But Governor Greg Abbott sent a letter to FEMA December 12 to request a second extension. It was granted Friday.

“Our request to extend the declaration request period is due to the size of the impacted area, the complexity of the disaster, and the need to distinguish damages sustained during the incident period,” Abbott’s letter read.

The city has until January 19 to submit its application.
