DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Mayor of Dallas is prioritizing crime reduction as the year comes to an end.
During Mayor Eric Johnson’s first State of the City address since taking office, he spoke about his recent request for a comprehensive crime reduction plan from city leaders amid a significant uptick in violent crime.
“What I’m looking for in this plan is goals and numbers,” said Johnson. “What do we think we can achieve in terms of crime reduction? By when? And how do we want to go about achieving it?”
In front of a crowded room of leaders at the Dallas Hyatt Regency Hotel Monday, the Mayor said the crime increase is a humanitarian issue and if not fixed, could lead to economic impacts. He spoke about the importance of addressing crime quickly.
“I’m not asking for anybody to tender their resignation or anything like that,” said Johnson. “It’s just a reflection of what I felt it was necessary to do to get the type of urgency that we need to get this plan done quickly.”
The City Manager and Police Chief have until the end of the month to complete the plan. They have been asked to present it to the City Council in January.
During the State of the City address, the Mayor also discussed a need for a stronger workforce and aspirations for Dallas to become an international city.
