Donations Needed for Holiday Wreaths to Decorate Veteran Headstones at DFW National Cemetery

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- A local non profit is asking for the community’s help to decorate headstones of veterans buried at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery this holiday season.

Wreaths Across America DFW Coordinator Chris Bush says they’re hoping to collect 46,000 wreaths by December 2nd to endure every headstone has a wreath this holiday.

“It is very important that our military family is not forgotten, and this is a way we show all of our veterans that you are not forgotten, you are remembered,” said Bush.

Bush and his wife, Mary, started the local chapter the same year their son — soldier Cpl. Peter Courcy of Frisco – was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2009.

Ever since, they’ve collected donations to purchase fresh wreaths to lay on the memorials at the cemetery. In the first year, they laid 250 wreaths. The endeavor has grown over the years, with 24,000 wreaths laid in 2018 with the help of 6,000 volunteers.

Wreaths will be laid on Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. at a public ceremony. “We want people to bring their kids out to lay wreaths too for our final mission to teach our youth the value of freedom,” Bushy said.

One wreath is $15, and donations can be made by texting “Wreath1” to 20222. You can also donate online at the Wreaths Across America website.

For every two wreaths donated, an extra wreath will be included.
