DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The sentencing phase is underway in the the trial for a white former Dallas Police Officer convicted of Murder in the shooting death of an unarmed black man in his home.
Amber Guyger claims she shot Botham Jean after mistaking his apartment for her own. She was found Guilty of Murder Tuesday in a Dallas County courtroom.
The same jury that convicted Guyger of Murder will determine her prison sentence. The punishment phase is expected to last several days. Botham Jean’s mother, Allison Jean, took the stand Tuesday afternoon and spoke about life without her son.
“I always referred to him as the glue between my three kids because he was always giving advice,” Jean said. “I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. It’s just been the most terrible time for me.”
The jury handed down the Murder conviction despite Guyger’s claim that she was in fear for her life. Testimony will continue Wednesday in the punishment phase of the trial.
The former Police Officer faces up to 99 years in prison.
