DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A former Texas A&M football player has been sentenced to life in prison for the hacking death of a Dallas jogger along White Rock Trail four years ago.
Thomas Johnson was convicted this week of the murder of Dave Stevens. He was sentenced by a Dallas County jury Wednesday.
Johnson’s defense tried to convince the jury he had mental health issues and was off his medication. Prosecutors argued Johnson was a danger to the public.
“He was absolutely mentally ill with schizophrenia,” said Special Prosecutor Justin McCants. “It’s a shame we don’t have anything else in place more than we do now. Because he didn’t ask to be mentally ill but he is and his hallucinations make him dangerous.”
McCants said the sentence brings justice for the community and Stevens’ family.
