DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A group of Dallas County Police Chief’s says that a new policy from the District Attorney aimed at reducing mass incarceration won’t stop them from arresting theft suspects.
Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot announced earlier this month that he won’t prosecute non-violent theft cases under $750.
“This is about the truly poor who are truly stealing to sustain themselves,” Creuzot said.
Grand Prairie Police Chief Steve Dye said Monday that many business owners are concerned they won’t be protected from theft anymore.
“Many people in our cities are very concerned about these new policies,” Dye said.
Dye was joined by other Dallas County Police Chief’s in signing a letter to Dallas County residents assuring them they will still follow the law.
“Our job is to keep the people of Dallas safe,” Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall said Monday.
During a City of Dallas Public Safety Committee meeting Monday, Creuzot took responsibility for what he called a “public misconception” of his new policy.
“We are looking for the person who is poor and who is taking something to sustain their lives,” Creuzot said. “This is not about going off and ripping off the store. That’s not what this is about.”
Creuzot said his office will monitor the effectiveness of the policy.
