Severe Weather Related Cancellations in North Texas

UPDATE:  11:42 PM.   Flash flood warning issued for portions of Denton, Wise and Cook Counties.  2-3 inches of rain; possibly more, has fallen in this area, especially hard hit Wise County, which has been pounded by strong thunderstorms tonight.  WBAP’s Chief meteorologist Brad Barton reports damaging winds in excess of 70-80 mph are currently reported in Denton County.  Residents of North Texas should remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions, heavy rainfall and storm formation.  A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for much of North Texas through 2AM, and several severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued and changed throughout the evening; conditions are expected to change rapidly.  Fort Worth drivers are currently finding driving very difficult with heavy rainfall.

UPDATE 10:51 PM – Storms appear headed for the DFW Metroplex roughly within the next hour.  Strong winds up to 60 mph and ping pong sized hail may be a part of the system that strikes the Metroplex this evening.  A reminder; a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for much of North Texas through 2 am.  Thunderstorm warnings remain posted in different areas and expire as new ones are announced.  Stay tuned to WBAP for the very latest and breaking news regarding weather bulletins and annoucements.

UPDATE 9:53 PM   Severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect across much of North Texas until 2AM.  Severe thunderstorm warnings are popping up across North Texas with some storms already reporting ping pong ball to tennis ball sized hail and winds gusting to 60 mph, and in one case tonight, 70 mph.   Storms are brewing south and north of the DFW Metroplex and expected to continue to bubble up and grow in strength.  Stay tuned to WBAP for weather bulletin updates, news featuring WBAP Chief Meteorologist Brad Barton with updates as conditions change and National Weather Service bulletins, watches and warnings are issued.

 

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- Southwest Airlines suspends   flight operations from 6 to 10 Wednesday night at Dallas Love Field ahead of severe weather.

This will impact 100 flights including arrivals and departures.

Southwest Airlines encourages customers to check their flight status online at southwest.com

Southwest says their number one concern is the safety of all customers and employees.

Schools and Universities in North Texas closed early and canceled after-school activities.

The University of Texas at Dallas is cancelling classes and activities after 3 p.m. Collin College closed at 1 p.m. SMU closed everything after 5 p.m. and Dallas, Garland, Irving and Fort Worth ISD canceled all after-school activities and Episcopal School of Dallas.

Also, Several City of McKinney facilities closed early and evening events have been canceled:

  • Apex Centre – closing at 4 p.m.
  • John & Judy Gay Library – closing at 4 p.m.
  • McKinney Community Center – closing at 4 p.m.
  • Old Settler’s Recreation Center – closing at 4 p.m.*
    The facility will stay open until the last child is picked-up from the after school program.
  • Roy & Helen Hall Library – closing at 4 p.m.
