DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The federal government is considering housing migrant children in the DFW metroplex. The consideration comes amid growing numbers of migrants seeking asylum in the United States.
The Health and Human Services Department is reportedly considering permanent and temporary shelters in cities like Atlanta and Phoenix, as well as Dallas-Fort Worth.
Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said Tuesday that the the size of a big city or region provides more resources for the government and the children being placed.
“This metroplex is more than 7.5 million people,” said Judge Jenkins. “Whatever they ask us to do we could absorb that.”
The decision on where the shelters will be located is left solely to the federal government.
“This is not a we do it for the federal government and wait for them to pay us back,” said Jenkins. “This is a situation where they pick a contractor and are responsible for paying for everything.”
Jenkins said Dallas County was not asked permission by HHS to build a shelter in Dallas, but instead for suggestions on possible locations. No time frame or specific numbers have been given. Jenkins said the shelters would come at no cost to the taxpayer.
