In Texas City ISD, School Safety Officers Are Armed With AR-15s

(WFAA)

Texas City, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – In the wake of more frequent school shootings, one Texas school district has taken safety to a whole new level.

Texas City ISD, near Galveston is on a mission to become the safest school system in the nation, by arming guards with AR-15s, using facial recognition technology, and tracking students with chip technology– all in reaction to the shooting in nearby Sante Fe last year.

Fox News reports,. a deputy stationed in each of the schools is given the high-powered rifle which is locked up in a safe location, accessed by a security code.

The extreme measures were suggested by the district’s new security safety officer, Mike Matranga, who was a Secret Service agent for 12 years.

Texas City residents approved a 6.5-million dollar bond for school security last year.
