Governor Abbott Names School Finance Reform Among Emergency Session Items

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) – Governor Greg Abbott held his annual State of the State Address before a joint session at the Capitol, ahead of Tuesday’s State of the Union. The Governor declared several emergency items for this legislative session affecting schools, including finance reform, teacher pay, and increased safety measures. Governor Abbott also named mental health screening as an emergency item, which would identify and remove students deemed dangerous through the program. Some universities in Texas already have such a program, including Texas Tech. Governor Abbott stressed that Texas public schools deserve access to these same programs.

The Governor also criticized federal lawmakers for not funding President Trump’s border wall, saying, “the federal government still has not fulfilled its responsibility”. Texas currently spends 800-million dollars a year on border security.
