McKinney, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – The McKinney City Council is looking for ways to remove an embattled councilman from office.

Months after being censured in connection with his actions during a traffic stop, 31-year old La’Shadion Shemwell now faces a continuous household violence charge.

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, the woman told officers he had assaulted her three times this year.

During a city council work session last night Mayor George Fuller provided more details about the charge.

“It was in fact the mother of his children, an African American woman residing in the same neighborhood of Mr. Shemwell that has alleged domestic violence.”For his part, Shemwell alleged that efforts to oust him are race-based.

“I’m not perfect, but if we’re changing the rules and we can change the rules that we might as well make it whites only.”

Shemwell went on to say:

“You saw the emails that said we were going to do a recall election to get Mr. Shemwell out of there. You’re talking about a occurrences that happen, yeah they typically happen. I’m the second African American elected and that’s something that doesn’t typically happen and that’s when they started bringing up the recall.”

According to city officials, current by-laws make it difficult to remove Shemwell.
In May, a McKinney officer stopped Shemwell for speeding in a 35-mph zone. During the stop, the councilman  refused to sign citations for speeding and having an outdated address on his driver’s license, he publicly accused the officer of having pulled him over for “being black with dreadlocks.” Video later revealed Shemwell’s aggressive language directed toward the officer.
