CEDAR PARK, Texas (AP) – Police have arrested the mother of two girls, one 6 and the other 5, who were found in “deplorable” conditions at a Central Texas home and unable to speak.
Authorities say the girls were only able to make unintelligible sounds when they were found in May underweight, wearing soiled clothing and with matted hair.
Their Cedar Park apartment contained bags of trash, little furniture and a closet with feces on the wall.
The mother of the girls, 26-year-old Mia Young, was arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of injury to a child. Police say charges are pending against the father.
Young was being held Saturday in the Williamson County jail. Online jail records don’t indicate whether she has an attorney.
The girls, who had no schooling, were placed in state custody.
