Austin (WBAP/KLIF) – Governor Greg Abbott has chimed in on a proposal to delete the term “heroic” from seventh-grade social studies courses about the battle of the Alamo.
Texas Monthly reports the change, suggested by a panel advising the State Board of Education did not sit well with many state lawmakers, including Abbott who tweeted, “Stop political correctness in our schools. Of course Texas schoolchildren should be taught that Alamo defenders were ‘heroic’!
Stop political correctness in our schools. Of course Texas schoolchildren should be taught that Alamo defenders were ‘Heroic’! I fully expect the State Board of Education to agree. Contact your SBOE Member to complain. @TXSBOE #txlege #tcot https://t.co/Ph9oBoBzKF

The change was recommended in a directive last month about what teachers should teach about Texas history and the state’s most iconic battle.
The panel said “heroic” was a “value-charged word.”
