Arlington ISD Students to Get Free Supplies and Health Screenings at Back to School Event

ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – School is just around the corner for thousands of Arlington students and the district wants to make sure they’re well prepared.

Leslie Bristow with Arlington ISD said the’re giving away 10,000 backpacks along with free health screenings and hair cuts to registered families.

She said the event is vital to many because seventy percent of the district’s students are economically disadvantaged.

“It’s really important for our families that they’re able to have this resource and the students feel like they’re able to have a successful start to the school year,” she said.

For some students, it’s difficult for their parents to provide the necessary school supplies and sometimes food throughout the year.

Bristow said those types of situations can weigh a student down.

“Students don’t feel like they’re prepared for the school year….they may not start off that well or enjoy their classes as much. So, it really makes a huge impact on their academic success if we can have them prepared for that first day of school,” she said.

The “Back to School” Kickoff takes place at the AT&T stadium in Arlington Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Attendees will also be treated to a short program beginning at 8:30 a.m. with welcome speeches from AISD Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos and Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams.

Bristow said there are still slots available. For more information, click here.
