GARLAND (WBAP/KLIF) – Busy summer months are causing six Texas DPS locations to overcrowd on a regular basis. In response to this issue the Department of Public Safety will be implementing an initiative that will send customers who can conduct their business online, by mail or by phone to an alternative driver license office. The new temporary initiative will affect the Conroe, Denton, Houston-Dacoma, Plano, Rockwall and Temple locations.
“The majority of Texans who are eligible to conduct their transactions online, by phone or by email, which would allow them to skip the trip to a DL office altogether, currently are not taking advantage of these convenient options,” said trooper Lonny Haschel.
Haschel said the overcrowding problem is especially worst for the Denton, Plano and Rockwall offices. These locations have small waiting rooms that quickly fill up, which cause customers to regularly be pushed out the door.
The alternative full-service locations are as follows according to a DPS Press Release:
– Denton office: Customers will be referred to the Carrollton Mega Center (4600 State Hwy 121, Carrollton, TX 75010).
– Plano office: Customers will be referred to the Garland Mega Center (4445 Saturn Rd., Ste. A, Garland, TX 75041) or Carrollton Mega Center (4600 State Hwy 121, Carrollton, TX 75010).
– Rockwall office: Customers will be referred to the Garland Mega Center (4445 Saturn Rd., Ste. A, Garland, TX 75041) or Garland Driver License Office (350 W. IH-30, Garland, TX 75043).
Haschel also added that DPS has to accommodate customer demand while also obeying fire code laws. He said these things add up and cause people to be pushed out the door into the extreme summer heat; which can create a life-safety concern for some customers. The temporary initiative will run from Monday July 9th to Friday August 31.
