5-year old Coen McDade (WFAA)

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – As a 13-year Dallas Fire-Rescue veteran, Captain Jim McDade is used to jumping into action quickly, but nothing could have prepared him for the recent, dire cancer diagnosis for his 5-year old son.

McDade told our media partner WFAA-TV that a bump on his son’s forehand, between his thump and index finger turned out to be a rare form of cancer.

The ailment known as Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma is an aggressive cancer that affects 1-out-of-a-million people.

Since the cancer has already spread to little Coen McDade’s bone marrow, he will require 54 weeks of chemotherapy.

“He’s supposed to be starting kindergarten,” said Mr. McDade. “Probably not now … you know watching him be scared is probably the hardest part. He’s not supposed to be scare, he’s five.”

Coen is being treated at Medical City Chilren’s Hospital.
