(WBAP/KLIF) – The Department of Homeland Security is speaking publicly about the complexity of human smuggling after 54 suspected undocumented immigrants were found in the back of a tractor trailer in San Antonio. The driver of the truck was arrested and is facing federal human smuggling charges.
The HSI said Wednesday afternoon that the criminal organizations believed to behind human smuggling operations are dangerous and have an extreme disregard for human life. HSI Federal Agent in Charge, Shane Folden said that the arrest of one driver won’t stop smuggling.
“You’re going to disrupt an organization by attacking their incentives and identifying recruiters for the organization,” Folden said.
The big rig was air conditioned and people had water but the U.S. Border patrol says smuggling in the heat of the summer is deadly. Just last year 10 people died in a similar case in South Texas.
The Department of Homeland Security asks anyone who has information about potential smuggling operations to call Police.
