McKinney, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – During a special meeting of the Mckinney City Council last night, embattled Councilman La’Shadion Shemwell approved a motion to censure himself. Shemell made the move after apologizing for claiming that he was racially profiled during the May 8th traffic stop.
During the public comment phase of the proceedings supporters of Shemwell voiced opposition.
One McKinney resident told council:
“I don’t think this helps the cause that I know this councilman holds dear to his heart. If anything I think it hurts it.”
Others say the censure action was racist. The city countered saying the vote of disapproval is based on Shemwell’s violation of the city charter “directing a city employee to act.” In the case of the May 8th traffic incident, Shemwell is heard on video directing the police officer writing his ticket to call the police chief.
The attorney who has been representing Shemwell on the matter told council that as a minority, he “feared” police.
Attorney Kim Cole also accused McKinney of have a “race problem.”
“The City of McKinney has a race problem. It may come as a shock for those of you who don’t live in this skin.”
Cole and Dominique Alexander, founder of the Next Generation Action Network said that McKinney officials never properly address race matters 3 years ago during an incident involving McKinney police and minority teens at a pool party.
Meantime, Councilman Shemwell said he hopes the censure will allow him to move forward and put the his traffic drama in behind him.
