FedEx Says Second Suspicious Package Found at Shertz Facility From Same Sender as Bomb

SCHERTZ (WBAP/KLIF News) – FedEx has confirmed that a second package found at it’s facility in Schertz, about 22 miles north of San Antonio, is from the same sender of a package bomb that exploded Monday night.

Authorities said investigators believe the packages were shipped from a FedEx store in Sunset Valley.

FedEx released a statement on social media.

“FedEx has confirmed that a package detonated at a San Antonio FedEx Ground facility early this morning. We have also confirmed that the individual responsible also shipped a second package that has now been secured and turned over to law enforcement. We are thankful that there were no serious injuries from this criminal activity. We have provided law enforcement responsible for this investigation extensive evidence related to these packages and the individual that shipped them collected from our advanced technology security systems. The safety and security measures in place across the FedEx networks are designed to protect the safety of our people, customers and communities and to assist law enforcement as appropriate.”

One person in the facility was affected by the blast.

“A package had been traveling along the automated conveyor when it had exploded. One employee that was standing near the explosion complained of ringing in the ears,” said Schertz Police Chief Michael Hansen.

As authorities in Schertz dealt with that situation early Tuesday, investigators in Austin dealt with a suspicious package reported at a FedEx facility near Bergstrom Airport.

The incidents are the latest in a series of bombings that has rattled the city of Austin and has spread to the San Antonio area.

Authorities have not said whether the bombing in Schertz is connected to the ones in Austin.

Frank Ortega with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said they’ve called in a multi-agency team from around the country.

“We have our national response team here, we have explosion detection canines here, we have intel research specialists, we’re working hand in hand with our FBI partners, state and local partners. We’ve been working around the clock,” he said.

So far this month, two people have been killed and four injured in the wave of bombings in Austin.
