AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) – Governor Greg Abbott has ordered a criminal investigation into allegations of the sexual assault of athletes at the Karolyi Ranch in Walker County.
Karolyi Ranch was the National Training Center for USA Gymnastics for years.
In the last few months, numerous athletes, including several Olympians, have accused former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar of sexual abuse while training at the facility.
Last week, a Michigan judge sentenced Nassar to up to 175 years in prison for multiple sexual assault convictions. He had already been serving a 60-year prison sentence on child pornography convictions.
More than 150 women and girls accused Nassar of sexual abuse under the guise of medical treatment.
Abbott released a statement about the investigation and called the allegations “gut wrenching.”
“Those athletes, as well as all Texans, deserve to know that no stone is left unturned to ensure that the allegations are thoroughly vetted and the perpetrators and enablers of any such misconduct are brought to justice. The people of Texas demand, and the victims deserve, nothing less,” he said.
The investigation will be a joint effort between the Texas Rangers and the Walker County Sheriff’s Office.
