DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – The adoptive parents of the Richardson toddler found dead in a culvert last year have agreed to relinquish parental rights to their biological daughter.
Wesley and Sini Mathews appeared in a Dallas juvenile court Friday morning and signed the paperwork, ending weeks of Child Protective Services hearings and delays.
Attorney Mitch Nulte said it wasn’t easy for them to sign away their rights.
“Both parents made an extremely difficult decision in giving up their parental rights because they think its in the best interest of their surviving child,” he said.
The couple remain in jail on separate charges. Wesley Mathews is charged with capital murder in Sherin’s death.
He came under suspicion by authorities after he changed the story surrounding Sherin’s disappearance and death several times.
He told police that he forced Sherin to drink her milk and then removed her body from the house after she choked and died.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s report indicates that Sherin died due to “homicidal violence.”
Sini Mathews is charged with child endangerment after admitting to police that the family left Sherin home alone to go out to dinner.
Sherin’s death sparked local, national and international outcry.
Earlier this month, the adoption agency used for Sherin was suspended by the Indian government after it said the agency showed negligence in assessing potential adoptive parents.
