Texas Drivers Given Option To Help Clear Sexual Assault Kit Backlog

Garland (WBAP/KLIF) – The next time you apply for or renew a Texas driver’s license or Identification card, you’ll have the option to support victims of sexual assault. In-person, mailed, and online applications will now ask if you’d like to donate $1 or more towards testing evidence in sexual assault cases. State representative Victoria Neave, who serves parts of Dallas, Garland, and Mesquite introduced the measure last year, aiming at cutting down on the number of backlogged sexual assault kits in the state. All funds collected will go to the Sexual Assault Evidence Testing Grant program, administered by the Criminal Justice Division of the Office of the Governor. Since the program began on Jan. 8, it’s received nearly 25,000 dollars in donations.
