DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The flu epidemic continues to hit North Texas hard as Dallas County reported 7 more flu deaths Wednesday afternoon, bringing the total to 38 deaths so far for the 2017-2018 flu season.

Dallas County Health and Human Services said the patients ranged in age from 51 to 89 and lived in Dallas, Cedar Hill, Garland, DeSoto and Rowlett.

The department said all were high-risk patients and died from complications from the flu.

Each year, the department stresses what residents can do to keep from contracting the virus. However, the amount of deaths so far has increased the sense of urgency when it comes to taking precautions.

“Staying home when you are sick and practicing good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands helps stop the spread of germs and prevents rspiratory illnesses like the flu. If you have a high risk condition, remember to stay away from individuals who have flu like symptoms,” said DCHHS interim director Ganesh Shivamaiyer.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends anyone 6 months or older to get an annual flu shot.

If you haven’t done so, you can get a flu shot at the DCHHS building at 2377 N. Stemmons Freeway. The clinic is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
