Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – In a dust-up over the upcoming 5-county North Texas MLK Parade, the Arlington NAACP and a number of religious leaders plan to call for a boycott of the event–which has been billed as the largest ever regional MLK celebration.
At issue is the namin of Texas Governor Gregory Abbott as the honorary Grand Marshall of the parade. Critics say Abbot has done more to undermine the civil rights of minorities than any other modern day Texas governor.
The group says Abbott helped draft and support the sanctuary cities bill. It’s also critical of Abbott’s support of redistricting plans and voter ID laws that they say intentionally discriminate.
Branch leaders call Abbott’s as Grand Marshall in the parade an insult to Dr. King.
Parade organizers say they chose Abbott because he is a state and regional leader.
A press conference is scheduled for later today.
