DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Dallas City Council members are trying to develop a plan to pay for school crossing guards as the date for the dissolution of Dallas County Schools nears.
The state committee charged with dissolving the company that provides school bus service to Dallas County said it will not pay workers after January 31st.
It’s going to cost the city $5 million for the 2019 fiscal year to keep the 388 workers employed.
City officials would like to split the cost between the county and school district.
“To continue with the current salaries and benefits that the school crossing guards are currently receiving, the staffing levels that are already being established and the schedules through the end of the fiscal year would be roughly about $2.5 million dollars,” said the city’s Kimberly Tolbert.
Council Member Kevin Felder said the city should not be wholly responsible.
“The governor is up for re-election. Mr. Huffines came up with this legislation in this election. So, I think we need to put it right back in their court,” he said.
Last week, the city sued the dissolution committee, asking for an injunction that would keep DCS in charge until July.
