Salvation Army Prepared for Shelter Population Increase as Temperatures Drop

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – As the temperatures drop to freezing and below this New Year’s Eve weekend, the Salvation Army said it’s ready for the increase in population at its shelters.

Typically, the shelter asks residents to clear out after breakfast but the organization’s Pat Patey said that rule is waived during extreme temperatures.

“During the bitter temperatures or even when it’s hot during the summer we allow people to stay during the day just to be out of the elements,” he said.

Around the holidays, the Salvation Army sees an increase in population anywhere from 10 to 20 percent.

“We’re usually geared up for this type of thing because we shelter a large numbers of people every night. So, when the population goes up it’s not a real crisis for us, we can handle it,” he said.

The organization urges the homeless in North Texas to take advantage of their services, which could be life saving during extreme weather.

Lyons said it’s the Salvation Army’s mission to take care of those in need but added that it takes the entire community to keep that effort going.

“We always need financial contributions to make all of this possible. We have enough supplies and food to feed the number of people that might required on any given night. Those things cost money to do. So, we invite people to give contributions to our organization,” he said.
