(WBAP/KLIF) – A Cleburne broadcaster is being criticized for insensitive comments he made during a football broadcast.
Mark Banton was calling the Cleburne game against Arlington Seguin for Jacketradio.com when he referred to the Seguin Cougars as the “Cougroes”, as heard on audio made public by the Fort Worth Star Telegram.
“Fourth and one, Cougroes,” Banton said in his play call.
Seguin’s student body is more than 37 percent African-American while Cleburne High School is nearly 50 percent white. Banton also referenced a cheerleader’s weight.
“Jenny Craig has got a lot of work to do with her,” Banton said to his broadcast partner when discussing the cheerleader program.
Banton does not work for Cleburne ISD, but the school district was notified of his comments by officials with Arlington ISD.
“Cleburne ISD does not condone any actions that are unprofessional, unkind, unethical, and we have been very disappointed and very saddened by what has taken place,” said District Spokesperson Lisa Majors.
Majors said the school district was told by the internet broadcast company that Banton will not call another game for Cleburne ISD.
